The use of an extra unsealed cover inside the standard bunch cover produced higher air temperatures and humidities inside the coverings than would be obtained using the standard cover. 'Sealing' the extra cover caused a further increase in temperature and humidity, and resulted in a modified atmosphere developing inside the covers. Because of the prevalence and non-selective nature of leakage it appears unlikely that 'sealed' bunch covers can be used to develop modified atmospheres with both low O2 and low CO2 concentrations.
