Nutrients balance in six years experiments on cropping systems submitted to different levels of crop management inputs [Apulia]

The results obtained from a six years trial (1986-91) carried out at Foggia (Southern Italy) were reported. The experiment consider 6 two-year rotations of durum wheat with sugar beet, sunflower and sorghum, with or without soybean as catch crop, and 3 continuous durum wheat (with or without sorghum as catch crop), submitted to two inputs levels (medium-high and medium-low). Beside the yield evaluation of different crops and soil fertility evolution affected by the experimental treatments, the nutrients balances were determined. Crop and soil samples (0-50 cm layer) were taken at harvesting of each year from all plots and all samples submitted to analysis. The results showed that using, on the soil, low fertilizer inputs a relative nutrient uptake decrease was obtained, but the ratio yield/nutrient uptake was highest during the trial. After all, the yield and the N, P and K uptake of biennal cropping systems were higher than continuous wheat; the fertilization efficacy (yield/uptake) showed best results with medium-low level; the phosphatic fertilizer is almost unnecessary; there is not always relation among nutrient balances (as budget) and soil determinations (sometimes for N but always for available K2O)
