There are approximately 15,000 hectare under rice production in Zanzibar. Almost all rice is grown under "rainfed" conditions on land that is seasonally waterlogged but generally unbunded and unflooded. Two thirds of the rice hectarage are in small valleys and one third on hydromorphic plains. The Rainfed Rice Development Project (RRDP), which was established in 1988, has the objective of intensifying rainfed rice production on the hydromorphic plains through the provision of land cultivation, input supply and extension services. RRDP has a small rice research programme which inludes advanced rice variety/time of planting trials and on-farm trials
