Consumer demand for bananas (Musa spp.) in Uganda and the magnitude to which price, income and preference influence its demand and consumption was studied. Results indicate that through the years 1970-91, national per capita consumption rate declined by 3.4 while production declined by 0.6. In the period 1985-91, however, production rates grew by 5.2 and consumption rate by 2.7. Consumers were found to be price responsive while cross sections results indicate that increased incomes were accompanied by increased consumption of bananas.
