Coffee husks appilication methods (surface, incorporation and both surface and incorporation) in banana plantations were examined for their influence on soil nitrogen and on root distribution and yield of bananas. Net nitrogen mineralization was highest in soils of the 50 incorporated and 50 surface applied treatment and lowest in the no mulch treatment (control). Root development under incorporation extended as deep as 140 cm. more than twice that under surface application. However greatest root volume was found within top 40 cm., regardless of method of application, indicating that bananas are surface feeders. Root biomass was highest in the 50 surface appilied treatment and was lower in the incorporated treatment. The control had the lowest root biomass. Banana yield followed a similar trend
