The role of the herbarium in plant genetic resources activities in Uganda

The herbaria in are some of the oldest research units in the country. They were started as basis for development of agricultural research or as educational research centres. They are therfore primary sources of and reference systems about plants. They are also vital information centres for botanical inquiries, classification, study of plant communities and historical record. One of the objectives of crop/plant improvement is to find gene resistance to pests, diseases and adverse environment from wild relatives of crops which constitute an additonal gene pool and introduce them to variuos cultivars. For purposes of exploration, conservation and utilization of these useful genetic resources, a herbarium will provide a basis for location, better understanding of the various resources
