[A comparison of FFB production and bunch components for some common DxP progenies planted in Jengka 25, Pahang, and Sahabat 6, Sabah]
1996
Chin, Cheuk Weng
The reason for the higher FFB production and bunch components for several common DxP progenies planted in Jengka 25, Pahang, and Sahabat 6, were examined with the hope that they can explain differences in oil extraction rates (OER) between Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia. The results for the period from 1992 to 1994 showed that FFB production in Sahabat 6 was higher due to higher bunch number. Oil to bunch was also higher in Sahabat 6 due largely to higher percentage of fruit weight to bunch and more fruits per bunch. These results support the observation that OER in East Malaysia is higher than in Peninsular Malaysia. Total rainfall and the number of sunshine hours per day were discounted as factors leading to the higher oil to bunch values in Sahabat 6. The better growing conditions in Sahabat 6, by way of maintaining high water table throughout the year and the better nutrient status of the soil, may be the reasons for higher FFB and oil to bunch production.
