Calves of the mother cow herd, totally 65 animals, were used for this investigation during the calving period 1993/1994. Body weight, growth rate and body temperature were measured and blood samples (jugular vein) were taken as well from the animals at the age of 20, 60 and 90 days. Blood acid base status, gas content, creatinine, urea, lactate, total protein, albumin, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl, hemoglobin and hematocrit were correlated with body weight and growth rate within suckler calf groups by lactation number of the mother cow and by the birth course. Specific changes of growth rate and of hemoglobin, hematocrit, gas content, total protein and albumin and strong correlation could be found at 60 and 90 days of postnatal life. Significant differences in some of the measures existed between calves of first lactation number cows and calves from those cows with higher lactation number and between calves delivered by heavy traction.
