Lumle Agricultural Research Centre (LARC), which was established in 1968 as a training centre, and now works as an agricultural research centre in the western hills of Nepal, has included fruit and vegetable crops in its programme since the beginning. As a result, a number of improved fruits, vegetables and vegetable seed production technologies have been identified, and subsequently adopted by the farmers in the LARC command area, as well as elsewhere in Nepal. These technologies are summarised in this paper. In spite of the great potential, prospects, and importance of horticultural crops in the western hills, this sector is facing various problems and constraints which limit production, productivity and economic return to the farmers. The major constraints associated with these crops are discussed in this paper. Priorities commodity and researchable area have been rationalized on horticultural commodities and expected research outputs are identified. As horticultural crop research in Nepal is very weak, suggestions are made to improve and strengthen the research network.
