This paper reviews relevant available literature on the factors which affect the productivity and economics of intensive calf production. The effects of such factors as type of milk, calf concentrate, calf growth rate and mortality, type of housing, age at weaning and criteria for weaning and general calf management are covered. These are all discussed in terms of producing calves destined for growth on high roughage diets.
