CARDI/IDRC Milk production systems (Guyana) project: Phase III - Third Annual Report [1991-1992]
1992
Initially eight farms were identified for the development of these models. On six farms the two models were successfully developed. Three for testing the model A and three for testing the model B system. The test farmers were selected based on their land resources and willingness to collaborate with the Project. These productions systems represented those which were typical of farmers along the coast. The major interventions were to establish improved pastures consisting mainly of Echinochloa pyramidalis (Antelope grass) to provide fencing, improved housing for animals and milking, and calf fearing systems and facilities. Fencing and subdividing of the pastures to prevent uncontrolled grazing was mandatory. Along test farms, guidance in terms of their use and management were also provided. Consequently training of the farmer and routine practices for the systems were implemented. The project began working with these farms in 1989. Since then different interventions were made on each farm as part of the development of the respective models. For standardisation purposes, 1991 was considered to be the first year of the Ex ante projections and Ex post results. Comparisons of the year 1 projections were the before intervention and actual data (Jan-Dec 1991) were done in an effort to determine the achievements of the systems. This estimate of performance was aimed at determining the viability of the interventions of the project.
