Inglés. Linseed and flax, Linum usitatissimum L. ssp. usitatissimum, belong to the plants, which have been cultivated first in history. Until cotton came up flax fibre had been of great importance in Europe. Today there is an increasing interest in lineseed, because of its content of oil. The different uses of flax led to a wide ranging diversity of this species, which would have been lost nearly completely, if genebanks had not saved some of it. The collection of the wild progenitor of cultivated flax, Linum usitatissimum L. ssp. angustifolium (Huds.) Thell., in the Gatersleben Genebank is used to do investigations on the evolution of flax and is a source for plant breeding

Die Bedeutung als Faserpflanze war bis zum Aufkommen der Baumwolle fuer Mitteleuropa sehr gross. Als Oelpflanze steigt die Nachfrage nach Lein gegenwaertig wieder an. Die verschiedenartigen Nutzungen fuehrten zu einer erheblichen Formenvielfalt, die zum groessten Teil nur in Genbanken erhalten blieb. Die Sammlung der wilden Ausgangsform von Lein, Linum usitatissimum L. ssp. angustifolium (Huds.) Thell., in der Genbank Gatersleben dient zur Aufklaerung der Evolution des Leins und stellt ein Reservoir fuer die Zuechtung dar
