Group housing of lactating sows - standardly with litter -is an animal-friendly method. The management and the structuring of the house conform with the natural behaviour of the animals. In Europe there are a number of methods, which can divided into two groups: first, absolute group housing, and second, the combination of individual and group housing. Especially in Scandinavia these systems are widely disseminated. Animal productivity is comparable to conventional systems. The requirements on management and handling are higher than with standard methods. Group housing of lactating is only applicable on farms, where group housing is used throughout all reproductive stages. In this paper, the current level of knowledge is shown.
