This paper presents the characteristics of two heliophilics, the sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) and the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), which require shelter-wood felling for their regeneration. An entomological study concerning four wood beetle families (Buprestidae, Cerambycidae, Lucanidae and phytophagous Scarabaeidae) was carried out in these clearings. They appeared to be very favourable to the studied fauna mainly because they allow light and heat to reach the ground. The importance of certain structures which are favourable for these insects such as stumps or branch heaps has been shown and some beetles which colonize them are presented. Concrete measures to increase biodiversity in forests, such as the conservation of fallen stems or old trees are also presented
