Wheat cultivar Tjelvar as a source of bunt (Tilletia) resistance

The Swedish winter wheat cultivar Tjelvar, resistant to common bunt (Tilletia laevis and T. tritici) and dwarf bunt (T. controversa), was crossed with the Czech cvs. Hana and Regina. Twenty six F3 lines of the cross Tjelvar x Hana and 50 F3 lines of the cross Tjelvar x Regina were inoculated with a mixture of teliospores of Tilletia tritici and T. laevis. Bunt reaction was evaluated in the field as percentage of infected ears of the total number of ears. Differences in the disease level of F3 lines were not defined enough to enable postulation of the number of resistance genes.
