Previous experiments developed the technology of making protected fat by reacting oil with calcium to make calcium soap. In this experiment, supplementation of protected fat for pregnant and lactating ewes was compared to a control group and one of unprotected fat. Twenty four mature ewes were used and allotted in 3 pens. One ram was introduced into each pen. A mixture of grasses and legumes (7:3) was given to all ewes until their pregnancy reached 10 to 12 weeks. Ewes were then separated and put into individual pens. Animals were fed elephant grass ad libitum plus 500 g concentrate which consisted of (A) control diet, (B) inclusion of 10 percent protected fat or (C) inclusion of 10 percent unprotected fat. Feed offered and refusals were weighed each day. Body weights of ewes and lambs were recorded until weaning. There were no significant differences in daily consumption before and after parturition among treatments (before : 951.2; 893.8 and 978.4g; after: 1060.0; 1060.8 and 1069g for treatments A; B and C, respectively). Supplementing fat to ewes resulted in higher daily gains than the control treatment but no difference was seen between supplementation with protected or unprotected fat (80.56, 90.92 and 88.89 g/d for treatments A; B and C, respectively). Similar results were found in average daily gains of young lambs obtained with all treatments (93.40, 96.99 and 102.2g/d for treatments A; B and C, respectively). Fatty acid composition of milk was different in palmitic and oleic acid content. The supplementation of protected and unprotected fat increased palmitic acid content. Oleic acid content increased with protected fat addition but not by free fat. In conclusion, protected fat tended to increase daily gain of ewes and palmitic and oleic acid content in milk. There was no negative effect of unprotected fat if calcium was also provided in the diet
