Effect of the covering soil surface on the moisture of corn and peanut root zones

A field experiment has been carried out to study the effect of the covering surface with plastic sheet between plants rows of corn and peanut which were grown almost the end of rainy season of 1993/1994 at PAIR-BATAN, Jakarta. Soil moisture was monitored by neutron probe and tensiometers. Result of this experiment showed that the covering soil surface with plastic sheet was able to inhibit the rate of decreasing soil moisture level in the root zone of corn and peanut at seed filling stage. In the area under plastic sheet cover, the level of soil moisture in corn and peanut area was not different, but in the area without plastic sheet cover the level of soil moisture of corn area was significantly lower than in peanut area. The highest soil moisture level was found in bare area covered by plastic sheet

Telah dilakukan suatu percobaan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penutupan permukaan tanah dengan plastik lembaran di antara baris-baris tanaman jagung dan kacang tanah yang di tanam menjelang akhir musim penghujan 1993/1994 di PAIR-BATAN, Jakarta. Kelembapan dipantau dengan neutron probe dan tensiometer. Hasil percobaan menyatakan, bahwa penutupan permukaan tanah dengan plastik lembaran dapat menghambat laju penurunan kelembaban tanah di zone perakaran tanaman pada fase pengisian biji jagung dan kacang tanah. Di areal tertutup plastik lembaran, kelembaban tanah yang ditanami jagung dan kacang tanah tidak berbeda, akan tetapi di areal yang tidak tertutup plastik lembaran, kelembapan tanah yang ditanami jagung nyata lebih rendah daripada kelembaban tanah yang ditanami kacang tanah. Kelembaban tanah tertinggi terdapat pada bero tertutup plastik
