[The foundation of local wooden piks placed horizontally for embankments swampy areas in West Sumatra (Indonesia)]

An alternative to improve the foundation of an embankment constructed on organic soft soil in swampy area is a simple method by placing local wooden piles vertically (known as cerucuk) or horizontally before constructing the embankment. Local fill material of organic clayey soil was also used, because its bulk density was low so the surcharge of the fill become light to reduce the settlement. By means of piezometer and settlement devices installed beneath the embankment, the behaviour of the embankment and its foundation can be monitored and evaluated
