Twelve banana and plantain cultivars were introduced into Malawi from International Institute for Tropical Agriculture in Nigeria and evaluated for yield, quality, local acceptability and resistance to Black Sigatoka. Almost all the banana and plantain hybrids showed resistance to Black Sigatoka in the first cycle as judged from the high number of standing leaves at harvest and very low disease score.
