Charcoal production is a recommended practice to control bush encroachment, a serious problem in Namibia. The feasibility of a charcoal business is determined by various factors like the biomass, bush density, species composition of the woody components and the diameter of trees. Surveys were conducted in the Karstveld area to obtain parameters which could be used to determine woody biomass.Three aggressive encroacher bush species, namely Blackthorn, sickle bush and purple-pod terminalia were used in the research. Through statistical analysis a regression formula was constructed which can be used to estimate biomass of the woody population suitable for charcoal production.
