The paper presents results of the specific surface area tests determining a different methods for example four soils. These soils, sand-silt mixture had the same grain size distribution and very different shape of surface area, from spheres (glass ballotini), to fly ash aggregates. The specific surface area determined by the geometrical measurement of glass ballotini and of the water sorption test method gave different results. Since geometrical measurement method give the real surface area, hence from comparison of the water sorption test method, a new value of water quantity adsorbed by 1 cu. cm of soil (13 square cm/g) in water sorption test was estimated. This value ought to be used in water sorption test method for cohesionless soils
