The aims of the CIRAD-FLHOR genetic and banana breeding programs are the identification and creation of new varieties which are resistant to or tolerant to diseases and pests. Two courses of priority research are planned: breeding of cooking banana types mainly for local consumption, and selection and improvement of dessert banana types for export and local consumption. This program is based on the improvement of diploid varieties for the synthesis of triploid varieties. The method is broken down into 4 successive stages: (1) obtaining pure (homozygotic) diploid fertile strains; (2) creation of F1 diploid elite (heterozygotic) hybrids by crossing these pure strains with each other: as with natural varieties, F1 hybrids may be of monospecific origin (M. acuminata) or interspecific origin (M. acuminata x M. balbisiana); doubling of the chromosomes of these hybrids by treating with colchicine to obtain tetraploid plants (4x = twice 2x); and (4) the synthesis of triploid hybrids (3x), by crossing this tratraploid (4x) plant, with another pure diploid strain (2x).
