Swennen, R. (Katholieke Univ. Leuven, Heverlee (Belgium). Lab. of Tropical Crop Husbandry)
Currently, the Laboratory of Tropical Crop Husbandry of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) is engaged in the transformation of banana for black Sigatoka and Fusarium wilt resistance using cells and protoplasts. In the short and medium term, the laboratory will focus on the optimization of the transformation protocol and compare it with meristem transformation technology developed by Texas A and M University. Transformation research is focused on the creation of fungal resistance by expressing genes coding for antifungal proteins. Several of these plant-derived genes will be incorporated into banana. Under consideration for incorporation are genes of the Bacillus thuringiensis endotoxin for weevil and nematode resistance. The search for Musa genes and promoters could lead to a better expression of desired traits and faster acceptability of transgenic banana plants.
