The political economy of sugar industry in Zimbabwe 1920-90
1996
Mlambo, A.S. | Pangeti, E.S.
The book outlines the history of the sugar industry from its early days as the dream of one man, Tom MacDougall, to its present state as a major agro-industry controlled by multinational companies. It traces the fortunes of the industry through periodic droughts, the liberation war and its disruptions, and the post-independence economic adjustments. The book highlights the problems of marketing sugar, that is the need to balance domestic needs with export quota comminities in the context of the weakness of the International Sugar Agreements; the problems raised by competition on the international markets by the increased use of artificial sweeteners; and the transportation problems for a landlocked country like Zimbabwe. It also highlights the attempts by major players in the industry to deal with some of their problems by such measures as diversification from sugar monoculture to other activities like cotton, fruit, maize, livestock and wildlife farming, as well as ethanol producting.
