Modern changes in the efficacy of pig production
1999
Holub, A.
Pig production consists in the control of a very plastic biologic process which has in the past decades gone through a precipitant development. Also changed have a number of functional characteristics of pigs. Only their prenatal development, litter size and birth mass of piglets have remained unchanged. Their early growth has accelerated due to the increased lactation performance which has already approached its sustainable functional level. Possibilities af increasing are therefore limited. The greatest changes have occurred in the nutrition of pigs. The fattening period shortens steadily due to changes in nutrition, selection, housing practices and improving health care. On the other hand, new health risks and problems emerge. Therefore, the management of veterinary care in large production units is based on preventive programs. Also prospective is the application of new generation of biopreparations produced through gene manipulation.
