To examine the role of ABA in plant stress physiology the following procedures are commonly employed: assay of endogenous ABA content application of ABA or of inhibitors of its synthesis and application of mutants. Stress is usually associated with increased endogenous ABA content, particularly during drought. Increased endogenous ABA content at low temperature is not so unequivocal and, if observed, it is commonly accompanied by water deficit. Application of ABA may increase tolerance of plants to low temperature.
