Genetic transformation of grain legumes - recent state and future prospects

The paper summarizes the recent progress of genetic transformation in grain legume crops. Transformation methods studied in grain legumes are listed with the emphasis on those that have been successfully used for transgenic plants production. The useful genes/traits introduced to major grain legumes as well as the recent situation with the commercialization of grain legume transgenic varieties in the world agriculture are reviewed. Limitations and future prospects of genetic transformation for grain legumes improvement are discussed.
