An evident quantitative difference in total mercury content in both fish muscle and liver (hepatopancreas) between two periods (1981-1989 or more precisely 1974-1989, and 1990-1995) is exemplified from Zelivka dam reservoir (filling initiated in 1970). An important decrease in total mercury content in tissues, mainly of fish of lower age and weight cathegories, was registered during the 1990-1995 period. No important sources of mercury contamination are known. Recent challenges are focused towards finding the reasons of these changes, as well as those of mercury acceptance and its bioaccumulation in food web in the aquatic environment.
