This first issue of development and agri-food policies in the Mediterranean region, CIHEAM annual report for 1998, is providing a global analysis and perspectives of current economic and political issues affecting food and agriculture as well as natural resources management in the Mediterranean countries. The outlook of the agricultural systems in the Mediterranean region and its reflection in a global context, the relations between the European Union and the Southern and Eastern rims with a specific reference to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the need to enhance human capital and training tools, are some of the key issues, which are strictly inter-connected, and all contribute to influence the economic growth of the region. This report has been conceived as a tool to assist policy and decision-makers, at national and international level, as well as a source of reference for professional agricultural organisations, in formulating policies responses to a variety of Mediterranean emerging issues, such as the promotion by 2010 of an Euro-Mediterranean free trade zone.
