Innovative farmers: Bapak Kanijan - reviving rattan in Sumatra is a booming business
1999
Manurung, G. | Burgers, P. (ICRAF Southeast Asian Regional Programme, Bogor (Indonesia))
Communities in Sumatra have always ventured into the forests to collect tree products for home use. However a decline in forest areas has resulted in fewer collecting sites, endangering the sustainable suppy of these tree products. The scarcity and growing demand in urban markets has increased the economic value of many tree products especially ratta. Many farmers have began to collect seeds and seedlings of rattan from the forests and are planting them in their farms. The article explains how one farmer is using his knowledge of the forest environment and propagation methods for rattan to boost the profitability of his land and rubber garden.
