Suitability of new broad bean cultivars for processing industry

In 1996-97, four small-seeded broad bean cultivars of home breeding: Gobik, Goral, Samson and Lider were compared with the traditional been cultivar Bartom. It was found that the tested cultivars different from each other in the height of plants, position of the first pod on the stem and pod setting at harvest. These differences are important as far as the seeding and harvesting are concerned. The highest seed yield at the milk stage was obtained from cv. Bartom. The small-seeded cultivars had lower yields amounting to 6.4-7.3 t/ha. The self-finishing cultivars Goral and Samson showed the best suitability for machine harvesting because their pods are set vertically in the upper part the stem
