Quality of raw cow milk in selected breeds

Somatic cell counts (SCC) and total bacterial counts in the reservoir milk samples on four Holsteins dairy herd were observed. Breeding with the highest number of dairy cows (403) showed constantly low values of total bacterial counts [to 50 x 10(E)3], but at the same time permanently higher values of somatic cell counts [250 x 10(E)3], giving evidence for higher percentage of subclinical mastitis. On the contrary, breeding with the lowest number of dairy cows (96) was struggling with the problem of higher values of total bacterial counts (over 100 x 10E(3) caused especially by lack of milk gland hygiene and milking machinery.
