Neolitsea cuipala occurs in the North-eastern region of India. It is an evergreen tree 8-20 m high with elliptic lanceolate leaves 150-300 mm long and 30-90 mm broad; fruits are single-seeded, ellipsoid of 120-160 mm size with a thick pericarp. Previously no chemical investigation and antifungal activity of this species have been reported though number of sesquiterpene lactones, triterpenoid sterols, triterpene alcohol and alkaloids have been isolated from N. ficheri and N. zeylanica. Therefore, an investigation was undertaken with N. cuipala for its antifungal chemical constituents.
