Structural and functional changes indicative of a weak estrogenic effect were found in uterus of ovariectomized cows fed a ration containing 500 g of Silybum marianum seed cake with 4.1 % of silymarin for 28 or 56 days. To avoid its possible adverse effect on fertility, such ration should not be fed for more than 4 to 5 weeks after parturition. On the other hand, it can be expected that, in addition to the hepatoprotective activity, silymarin may have favourable effects on post-partum involution of reproductive organs, particulary in cows with low levels of natural estrogens.
