The responses of soil fungi and sorghum to pre-planting soil treatment with three doses, 2,10 and 20 kg a.i./ha, of linuron were studied. The mycoflora was promoted after 1 week of soil treatment, but it was suppressed after long periods especially with the highest dose. Linuron had promotion effect on shoot length and viability of sorghum at zero and long time of soil treatmnet. Metabolic responses of three common soil-borne fungi to liquid medium treatment with four concentrations, 10, 30, 70 and 100 ppm a.i., of linuron were studied. Mycelial growth, nitrate consumption, extracellular protein and cellulase activity of Aspergillus flavus, Emericella nidulans and Nectria haematococca were promoted by the lower doses and inhibited at the highest one. Ammonia was accumulated in the external medium of all tested fungi at the higher concentrations. E. nidulans represents the best degrading fungus to linuron in liquid medium and in soil.
