Differences in yield, morphological and physiological traits among old and new winter wheat cultivars were detected. Differences in yield traits between high and low level of nutrients were higher for old cultivars. The genotypic tolerance of old and new cultivars to different abiotic stresses (drought, low pH, high temperature, osmotic stress, low level of nutrients) reduces decrease of the yield especially at low level of nutrients. Recent cultivars express higher vigour of seeds and tolerance to the abiotic stresses. The more productive recent cultivars have a higher harvest index, higher number of grains per ear, higher weight of grain per ear, higher density of spike, lower height of plant, lower length of spike. Old cultivars are more tolerant to the drought and high temperature stresses, with deeper penetration of the root system into the soil.
