Trade policy options for Caribbean agriculture in an era of global trade liberalization

This paper focussses on trade liberalization in the agricultural sector of a number of regional countries. It begins with an overview of the global trade liberalization initiatives and reviews the trade policy and liberalization attempts in the various countries in terms of the overall boundaries set by GATT/WTO, CARICOM (CET) and the regional blocs, NAFTA and the EU. Overall trade policy stategies for various commodities and subsectors are suggested on the basis of the liberalization options that, in terms of scope and schedule, are most beneficial to the overall welfare of the region.
