An account of the early development of the export ornamental industry in Trinidad and Tobago is given. The research activities in ornamental plants in the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Marine Resources are reviewed and compared to the export values of cutflowers over the twelve-year period 1985-1997. These preliminary studies identified areas for further studies, which, in conjunction with recommendations by the key players in the industry, form the basis for future research projects. Estimated costs are suggested together with priorities for survival and growth of the industry.
