In a grazing trial at Marondera, Zimbabwe, the effect of stocking rates, on performance of growing Hereford, Africander and Mashona cattle and on botanical chandes was measured over seven years on hyparrhenia veld reinforced with stylosanthes guianensis cv oxeley (fine-stem stylo). Animals came into the trial as weaners and were kept for two to threeb years. Live weight was measured at intervals of two to four weeks. Animals in all treatments lost weight in the dry season. There was a decrease in the effect of stocking rate on animal performance in the later half of the trial which coincided with an increase in abundance of sporobolus pyramidalis under heavier stocking rate and with the use of hardier indigenous Mashona cattle.
