Farming systems in the hills are complex diverse and risk prone resulting from varied agro-ecological, socio-economical and socio-cultural condition. There is a great challenge for research to generate technology for improving livelihood of resource poor farmers through increased production in the hills. ARS Lumle is mandated to generate the technologies for 11 western hill districts for both on hill and area mandates given by NARC. Thirteen research team have developed strategy for research project to be implemented in future and are responsible for generating technologies at station/agro-ecological research (AER) sites. Verification and dissemination of generated technologies is carried but by respective teams through OR programme in different OR sites situated in specific domains with joint collaboration of extension and farmers. Action research team is responsible for conducting adaptive research in areas not addressed by other teams to solve immediate farmers' problem. It also focuses in strengthening linkages among extension workers, farmers and other stakeholder. Multidisciplinary activities will be included by considering the farming system in a holistic approach with more emphasis on socio-economic parameter in OR programme. Multiplication of the technologies at OR sites has vital in disseminating the technologies which will be incorporated for effective implementation of OR programme.
