Mergers and competition in the Greek food industry: some comparisons with other EC countries
1992
Lavranos, S.
The increased number of mergers in the Greek food industry has been associated, from the beginning of the merger movement, with the strengthening of the market power motive and also, with an improvement in the short-run financial performance, of the Greek food firms involved in mergers during the period 1987-1990, at the post-merger period. These structural developments appear to follow a similar pattern in all EC countries-irrespective of their number of mergers and the popularity in the strengthening of the market share motive would lead to a substantial increase in concentration and lessening competition. This may provide support to the relevant policy measures taken recently both by the Greek and EC authorities. The EC regulation seems to be an appropriate policy preventing monopolistic mergers and encourages the process of restructuring a competitive single European market.
