Rural tourism, agro-tourism: a general presentation with an emphasis on the Cape of Peace, Akrotiri-Irinis in Crete, Greece
1994
Digalaki, K.
There exists a general confusion over the terms agro-tourism, rural tourism, farm tourism, green tourism. According to Papakonstandinidi's proposal the term agro-tourism is adopted for Greece. Thereafter, the author of the thesis will employ the terms rural tourism and agro-tourism interchangeably, signifying both farm-house holidays and bed-and breakfast type of tourism, as well as, the G.N.T.O.'s definition, which in turn, are analysed in the text. Agrotourism as a special form of tourism which appeared in the countries of western Europe about 20 years ago, is promoted as an alternative solution to mass tourism. Agro-tourism has gained a new level of importance as a potential income-earner and job-generating activity. In addition, there is a growing demand from the ever-increasing urban population to enjoy and participate in country-living with expectations of wholesome food, physical outdoor recreation and mental peace and tranquility.
