Black alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.) - wood structure and machinability
2001
Torelli, N. (Slovenian Forestry Inst., Ljubljana (Slovenia))
An outline is given of the wood anatomy of black-alder-wood (Alnus glutnosa) with particular emphasis on pith flecks and secondary changes in wood. Quality of planing, shaping, sanding, boring, turning, nail- and screwsplitting according to ANSI/ASTM and Davis (1962) was tested and compared with beech-wood (Fagus silvatica). Red alder machines easily. Pith flecks are considered to be a decorative feature. The most serious specific defect of alder-wood is the "red heart" (discolored wood) in the stem core.
