The studies were carried out in the Agricultural Experimental Station in Pawlowice near Wroclaw (Poland) in 1998-00. Straw was ploughed in and high rates of Ca (1.5 t/ha) and N (75 kg/ha) were applied to oil seed rape and winter wheat plots. To determine the density of springtails, 12 soil cores, 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm deep were collected between rows in autumn and in spring. Ploughing in oilseed rape and winter wheat straw in many cases reduced springtails number in soil samples. High rates of Ca and N soil fertilization showed negative or positive influence on the total number of Collembola and their species number. Mixed application of straw and Ca fertlizer in single cases caused the increase of both, the number of springtails and their species number. Such effect was not found in the case of mixed application of straw and N fertilizer
