An assessment of alternative merger strategies for agricultural cooperative unions in Crete
2001
Kontogeorgos, A.
The objective of this thesis is to examine how Cretan cooperatives can implement enlargement strategies similar to those applied by private-owned firms, such as mergers, in order to improve their competitiveness and ultimately their performance. In this study a profitability equation was employed to illustrate how size affects cooperative performance. For this purpose, data concerning the productive structural, organizational and financial situation of the cooperatives were collected from almost all the cooperative unions in Crete. An assessment of alternative merger strategies that cooperative unions might apply was conducted in order to determine which is the most feasible. In addition, a comparison was made between the merged cooperative unions, derived by the most feasible strategy, and the two leading private - owned firms in the olive oil market. Furthermore, a merger procedure was proposed to elucidate the possible difficulties which might arise during the implementation of the merger strategy
