This paper deals with Pinus halepensis plantations in Alicante's province. The particular orographic and geographic situation of this area lead to a large climatic variability from subhumid to arid with different thermic regimes. The mean yearly production of the bole for 120 sites, as well as their basal areas (at 0.5 m.) show that an important percentage of these plantations (50 per cent) must be consider strictly as protection forests. An important lack for managers in vegetation cover restoration in this area is the difficulty to predict the success of these plantations. In this line, based on site index curves, the site quality for more than 100 stands has been obtained as a first step in obtaining this predictive equation.
