Persimmon breeding at the National Institute of Fruit Tree Science of Japan was summarized focusing on offspring populations yielded by crossings made in the last two decades. The objectives of the breeding program were to release new cultivars with the following characteristics: Pollination Constant and Non-Astringent (PCNA), early fruit ripening, fruit free of cracks, desirable taste and high productivity
