The influence of cultivation method on yield and nitrate content in butterhead lettuce

Butterhead lettuce was cultivated in a plastic tunnel in autumn and spring. The seedlings from plug trays were planted in PE pots, with two different capacities: 0.5 and 1.5 cubic dm. The peat substrate in the pots contained all the nutrient elements. The bigger pots were irrigated by a capillary system. The smaller ones, standing on a watering mat, were fertigated by a drip-line system. EC of nutrient solution was 1.8 mS/cm. Lettuce cultivated in the soil acted as the control. In autumn, the biggest lettuce heads (over 200 g), with the lowest level of nitrate (551 mg NO3/kg FW), were obtained on the watering mat. The same trends were noted in spring
