Heritability estimates for some reproductive traits in Romagnola beef cattle reared in Italy

Inglés. Genetic parameters for age at first calving (AFC) and calving intervals (CIs) were estimated using records belonging to 19,031 Romagnola cows born between 1980 and 1998. Estimates of variance components, heritability and repeatability were obtained using a derivative-free algorithm assuming an Animal Model. AFC was normally distributed around the mean (989.6 d), whereas AvgCI presented almost 60% of the observations below the mean (436.3 d) and similar pattern was observed for the first three CIs investigated. The h sup (2) for the AFC was 0.20, whereas for CI1, CI2 and CI3 were 0.04, 0.03 and 0.06, respectively. The h sup (2) for AvgCI was 0.04 and the p sup (2) value (permanent environmental variance to total) was 0.036, reaching thus a repeatability value of 0.076. As expected, the heritability of these traits was low, but it seems possible to insert at least AFC within the objectives of genetic improvement

[Sono stati stimati i parametri genetici per l'eta' al primo parto (AFC) e gli intervalli interparto (CI) utilizzando le registrazioni relative a 19.031 vacche di razza Romagnola nate fra il 1980 e il 1998. Sono state ottenute stime dei componenti della varianza, dell'ereditabilita' e della ripetibilita' utilizzando un algoritmo libero derivativo emulante un Modello animale. AFC presentava una distribuzione normale intorno alla media (989,6 g), mentre Avg CI presentava quasi il 60% delle osservazioni al di sotto della media (436,3 g) e un simile andamento e' stato osservato per i primi tre CI studiati. L'h sup (2) per l'AFC era 0,20, mentre per CI1, CI2 e CI3 erano, rispettivamente, 0,04, 0,03 e 0,06. L'h sup (2) per AvgCI era 0,04 e il valore di p sup (2) (varianza ambientale permanente rispetto al totale) era 0,036, raggiungendo cosi' un valore di ripetibilita' di 0,076. Come atteso, l'ereditabilita' di questi caratteri era bassa, ma pare possibile inserire almeno AFC fra gli obiettivi del miglioramento genetico]
