The effects of olive mill wastes on yield and quality of maize and lolium and on N efficiency in the trials carried out in open field and lysimeter in Southern Italy were studied. The research on open field was conducted at Foggia on a catch-crop of maize, comparing N traditional fertilization with compost deriving from solid olive waste and fowl-manure; the effects of liquid and solid olive mill wastes on yield and quality of lolium were evaluated at Rutigliano (Bari) on lysimeters. Maize yield, N content of plant, early nutritional state, N uptake, nitrate value and N efficency index were determined. The results show that the composted solid olive wastes do not affect yield, N uptake and N efficiency index. N uptake increased from control to N fertilized plots (traditional or associated with olive mill wastes). The study on lolium points out that 50 cube m h*[-1) of liquid olive wastes was the best dose, because lolium growth was not reduced
